Working in a corporation can be a real challenge, especially if you're the type of person who finds it difficult to make certain decisions and always needs the support of those around you. From my point of view, a corporation is like a city, while small businesses are more like life in a village.
In a city, everyone goes about their lives, and there are moments when you don't even know your neighbours. Whereas in a village, everyone knows each other, there's a sense of community and more support, and time doesn't pass as quickly. However, it's difficult to adapt to a different environment when the need arises. Neighbours in a city, in a multinational corporation, you don't get to know all your colleagues, even after years of working in the same place.
Responsibilities are well defined, and after the trial period, you must manage on your own and take ownership of what you do. Of course, , you can advance based on your knowledge, juggle between projects, and reach where you want to be professionally.On the other hand, in a small business, you rarely can grow. There are moments when those around you are much more interested in your personal life than your performance at work, and you know everyone around you.
Like anything else, each has its advantages and disadvantages. But before embarking on a path, it's good to think where you feel most comfortable. Where you believe you can best leverage your skills and knowledge. The best way to determine the right place is after experiencing both sides (I say this from my experience).
My first job was in a company with fewer than 100 employees. It was a place where I could discover my professional style,know my limits, and grow more personally than professionally. When I realized that I couldn't develop professionally there, I chose to continue my career in a multinational corporation that challenged me from the beginning, pushed me out of my comfort zone, and made me more confident in the knowledge I had already gained. However, I believe the choice between the two also depends on where you are professionally and what your priorities are.
After experiencing both, I can say that the right sequence for me was starting in a small business, and then transitioning to a corporation. I enjoy exploring and having the opportunity to grow, but working in a small company helped me gain more confidence in myself because the adaptation was much slower, and I wasn't thrown directly into an unfamiliar world.
