Here are details of the studies:
The Ikea Syndrome or Ikea Effect is, if you will, a filter that alters our perception and automatically our behaviour. It's useful to know it, to be aware when it manifests itself in us and to use it all consciously, but especially responsibly in teams. It is based on the value we give to the things we create with our own hands. According to the Swedish giant, the products offered by the likes of Ikea are more valuable because they give shoppers the opportunity to assemble them themselves.
Based on this idea, I thought about how this effect could be applied in any company to add value.
I am not the owner of universal solutions, nor do I believe in them, but here are some ideas:
- Teams be encouraged to set their own procedures by which they achieve the results the company sets and demands
- Teams to be able to decorate their own offices or spaces with what they choose
- Team leaders can create moments for the team to stop and consider how they do things in different contexts: when they make decisions, when they have conflicts, etc. Working with many teams in both coaching and teambuilding programs, I have seen that most of the time teams are not aware of their personal way of making decisions. They don't even know they have one. Much less do they have the opportunity to choose for themselves, by experimenting, what that should be. It's all a context of doing things with your hands. More interestingly, as leaders you can create contexts for teams to consider and then make decisions about how their team resolves conflict. Usually, the leader is also the policeman and he/she resolves conflicts that come from the team and are team related.
I invite you to stop and reflect on how you could use the fact that we are more attached to what we create personally anyway, with our hands and/or mind, and even test the effect by involving your team.
